Ergonomic Assessments
Ergonomic assessments, also referred to as workstation assessments, ensure that a worker’s workstation is ergonomically designed to minimise the risk of injury and maximise productivity.
During an Ergonomic Assessment of an employee’s workstation, the assessor addresses not only the workstation, but also the associated work role and tasks.
The assessor gains a history of the person’s symptoms and an understanding of the physical and cognitive demands of the person’s role. This information is then used to;
- Ensure the client’s work station is suitability organized in line with ergonomic standards and best practice guidelines
- Ensure any issues in terms of pain or dysfunction are analysed and
- Provide appropriate recommendations & functional education to overcome the identified barriers.
Assessments are also conducted:
- to support the return to work of an injured worker by ensuring that their workstation is designed to minimise any discomfort as they recover from their injury and prevent any aggravation of the injury
- for workers who work from home, to ensure their home work environment is safe and ergonomically designed.
The assessment is conducted by an occupational therapist who will provide a report including information on:
- posture
- physical and muscular work demands
- equipment and workplace design
- environmental factors (lighting, noise and temperature)
- keyboard use
- pause-stretch exercises.
Outcome
- It helps to prevent workplace injury,
- It reduces risk of relapse or re-occurrence of injury
- It Increases productivity.
- It identifies easy, affordable solutions to support employee health in the workplace.
